The following prayer, ascribed to Basil the Great, is traditionally used in the Eastern Churches each day in their time of mid-morning prayer. It is a helpful reminder of our calling to open ourselves to the indwelling and transformation of the Holy Spirit each and every day.
Let us pray.
Lord God, source of true peace, you once sent the gift of your Holy Spirit in fiery tongues to enlighten your apostles, empowering them to proclaim the Gospel in word and in deed. May the same Spirit teach us, sinners though we are, how and for what we ought to pray. Guide our lives, O calm haven of the storm-tossed, and reveal the way in which we should walk. Renew in us a right spirit and steady our minds, so that guided and guarded each day by your good Spirit, we may be enabled to share your truth and live out your commandments, always remembering that your glorious presence beholds all our deeds. Do not let us be deceived by the corrupting delights of this world, but rather strengthen in us the desire to attain the treasures of the world to come. Amen.
